Rubber vs. Natural Mulch

Rubber Mulch vs. Natural Mulch

Over the years one of the most common questions we get from homeowners is “What type of mulch is best for our flower beds?”

While there are many options for ground covers, for example tree bark, wood chips, ground cover plants, rock mulch, etc, this will discuss the difference between rubber mulch and natural hardwood mulch. Natural mulch is anything organic or naturally derived from the earth. This can include wood chips, wood bark, stone, straw, etc.  Rubber mulch is manufactured out of recycled tires, sometimes dyed and come in shredded chunks.

The benefit of rubber mulch is that is last longer than an organic wood mulch. This means homeowners have to replace it less often, resulting in less upkeep. When considering effectiveness, the rubber mulch works about the same as hardwood mulches in helping control weeds. The thicker, the better is rule of thumb.

The negative aspects of rubber mulch address the main issue, soil health. While rubber mulch may be able to provide an adequate groundcover it can leach toxic chemicals into the soil causing harm to your plants, soil, and ground water.

Natural Hardwood Mulch adds nutrients and food to the soil over time as it decays creating a slow-release feeder. This increases the soil health, regulates soil temperature, and helps hold in moisture. We encourage our customers to not use landscape fabric (unless using gravel mulch) as it is ideal for the mulch to decompose adding nutrients to the soil.

We stock a variety of wood mulches, including IPEMA Certified Playground Mulch and Natural Grade A Cedar Mulch. All mulches are manufactured to the highest quality and delivered in bulk throughout the OKC Metro area. For more information give us a call/text/DM/email.

Amazing Gardens in Oklahoma

Oklahoma is home to some amazing gardens. From manicured, European-inspired courtyards to thriving utopias nestled within the heart of bustling cities, gardens across the state beckon visitors during the sun-soaked months of spring and summer. Here are a few everyone should see.

  • Honor Heights Park: Situated on the western edge of Muskogee in eastern Oklahoma, the renowned 132-acre Honor Heights Park is famous for its stunning azaleas, which are prominently displayed throughout the surrounding area and within the park’s popular azalea gardens. In the spring, their delicate white, pink, red and purple blooms burst onto the landscape during the month-long Azalea Festival, often considered one of the best spring events in the South.

  • Philbrook Gardens: Constructed for Villa Philbrook when it was still a home, the original design combined Italian, English and French garden attributes. The Philbrook Gardens were intended to showcase native plants and trees, and the gardens have retained this mission throughout the decades. To this day, the gardens offer superb outdoor spaces for viewing Oklahoma’s natural environment at its finest.

  • Lendonwood Gardens: This six-acre expanse features more than 1,200 species of plants, set amidst native trees as well as transplants such as dawn redwood and Himalayan cedar. Stroll to the daylily display area to see the bright blooms of around 500 varieties of the plant, and then marvel at the deep, rich colors added to Lendonwood by more than 75 varieties of Japanese maple trees.

  • Myriad Botanical Gardens and Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory: The glass-encased, tube-shaped Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory holds much more than one would expect: entire ecosystems flourish here, from a lush rainforest to an arid desert. Over 1,000 plants from all continents except Antarctica fill the conservatory, from humble cacti to towering palms that reach skyward.

How To Get The Best “Topsoil Delivery Near Me”

If You need a large amount of Dirt and don’t have the time or a vehicle large enough to haul it, a Top Soil Delivery Service near you will bring what you need right to your home or jobsite. But how do you pick the right one?

Whether you are an experienced gardener or a planting newbie, a high-quality soil is crucial to the success of any landscape. The upper layer of topsoil contains organic composted materials, microorganisms and minerals that plants need to survive. Since many homeowners do not own a large enough vehicle to haul such a heavy load, ordering topsoil from a professional service by searching “topsoil near me” can save time and money when a company delivers it directly to your door.

Choosing The Right Topsoil Provider. Comparing Cost, Quality, and Time.

  • COST: The word “Topsoil” can mean different things depending on the type of service the provider usually does. A “Trucking Company” that focuses on Construction work and large volume will have a much broader term for the soil. If its brown, or kind of brown, and if it can be leveled with a bulldozer it is topsoil to a Trucking Company. While they may be a little cheaper, most homeowners do not have a bulldozer. A sub-par topsoil will end up costing more time and money in the long run when you consider the additional labor and waste.

  • QUALITY: A seasoned supplier will offer high quality blended soils and mulch needed to tend to a broad range of plants. A Screened and Pulverized Topsoil with a High PH content is recommended for landscaping, planting, lawn leveling and laying sod. For a higher organic content in Gardens and Flower Beds use a Garden Ready Rich Mix Soil. It is essential that these Soils be high quality, so don’t cut corners with a trucking company and risk getting stuck with a load of dirt you can’t use.

  • TIME: Topsoil delivery services can efficiently bring gardening supplies right to your door. By hiring a service, you don’t have to invest your time and divert from your busy schedule to do it yourself. When choosing your provider, Customer Reviews can be a great source to help make your decision. Trucking Companies usually fit in homeowner deliveries around construction work, so it may take all day for a delivery to finally arrive. With a Landscaping Supply Company, homeowners and landscapers come first. Scheduling a delivery should be convenient by both Phone and Online with dependable time frames.

How to Save Money on Topsoil Delivery

  • Buy Topsoil in Bulk. Bagged Soil can cost up to double the cost of bagged topsoil

  • Save money by splitting a load with a neighbor. Consider asking a neighbor who needs soil if they would like to split the cost with you.

  • Calculate how much soil you need with as much accuracy as possible to avoid paying for extra soil.

How Much Topsoil Do I Need?

Are you wondering, “How much is a cubic yard of topsoil?” Enter your dimensions into a Coverage Calculator to find out how much soil you need for your project.

Build your Fire Pit Area with Gravel and Stone in OKC

In Oklahoma, a fire pit is the perfect gathering area for get togethers during the cool fall nights. What’s better than a DIY project that not only looks great but also serves as an area for being around friends and family.

Fire Pit Seating Area and Walking Path

Selecting a SAFE ground cover for the surrounding perimeter of a firepit is one of the most important decisions regarding the safety of the area. It is important to create a stone or rock barrier at least 8 to 10 feet around the flame to prevent any sparks from catching a ground fire. Limestone Gravel and South Canadian River Rock are the most commonly sold stones for this purpose in the Oklahoma City area. The limestone Gravel is a chipped stone which lays flat and provides an effective ground cover at an economical price, while the River Rock is a rounded stone for a more aesthetic look. This stone is mined out of the South Canadian River and provides a dramatic impact to any landscape. Both of these stones area available in Bulk dump truck delivery throughout the OKC Metro area, Moore, Norman, Blanchard, Newcastle, and surrounding areas.

Gravel Size for Fire Pit and Walkways

The size of gravel needed will depend on traffic, drainage, and slope of the ground. For low traffic areas with little slope and adequate drainage a smaller stone is recommended. Smaller rocks are easier to walk on providing a better walking area. For areas with higher traffic or drainage can be an issue consider a larger stone. Larger rocks stay in place better and provide a solid foundation. Sizes for both the Limestone Gravel and River Rock range from 3/8” up to 1 1/2”.

Low Maintenance Landscaping ideas in Oklahoma

Low Maintenace Landscaping in Oklahoma

This summer was a scorcher with record breaking high temperatures throughout the state and with each summer seemingly drier than the last it is more important than ever to incorporate a low maintenance eco-friendly landscape.

Oklahoma City weather, what grows here?

The answer is drought tolerant plants that are native to Oklahoma. You will need plants with long and deep root systems that tap into deeper moisture resources. The plants are naturally designed to handle Oklahoma’s dry hot summers. Arkansas Bluestar, Daylilies, Milkweed, Autumn Sage, Red-Hot Poker, Ornamental & Native Trees, and Shrubs are popular heat and drought resistant plants that adapt well to the soil they are planted in.

Mulch! Stone or Hardwood - Which is better for Oklahoma?

Mulching benefits go far past the aesthetics. A ground barrier separating the plants root system from the harsh summer heat and winter freezes is crucial for the success of any plant. Not only does a layer of Stone Mulch or Hardwood Mulch prevent weeds, it also regulates the moisture and soil temperature. Mr. Mulch offers a variety of Decorative Stone and Hardwood Mulch, something for every design.

Cedar Mulch, our Top Selling Wood Mulch, adds a dramatic impact and aroma. This product is made from local cedar, dried and shredded to a fine texture for landscaping. Cedar decays slower than hardwood mulch & its shredded texture causes it to mat together. This blocks the sun to existing weeds, prevents germination of new weeds, and is not easily washed away by rain. Cedar's aromatic quality naturally repels insects.

Looking for something that lasts a little longer? Consider Decorative River Rock. This beautiful stone is locally mined out of the Canadian River and comes in a variety of sizes. River Rock is a natural rounded stone with distinctive smoothness and colors. Centuries of moving waters and shifting streambeds created this beautiful stone. River rocks have many common applications, including landscaping & decorative ground covering, construction material for wall facades and walkways and for use in interior design projects.

HOA Playground Mulch, what board members need to know

IPEMA Certified Playground Mulch for HOA, schools, childcare facilities.

Many associations have various amenities they offer to their members and the most common amenity a HOA will provide is a playground for children. There are different types of playground equipment to choose from, and whether you are installing new equipment or maintaining existing equipment, there are many different things for an HOA board to consider.

Your playground must be built and maintained up to certain standards

Depending on the height of the equipment, an IPEMA certified fall material may be required. All swings and any structure over the height of 48” will require a depth of at least 10 inches of loose fall material ground cover. The playground must also be ADA compliant, like having access ramps and entrances maintained and accessible.

IPEMA certified and ADA compliant fall material required for HOA

Homeowner Associations have the same requirements as schools, churches, and childcare facilities for their playgrounds. The most economical and commonly used fall material ground cover for these areas is the Kiln dried Hardwood Playground Mulch. This engineered wood fiber meets or exceeds the impact-absorbing requirements of ASTM 1292 and ASTM F2075 as required by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. It is made from ‘virgin’ lumber meaning that the feedstock has not been subjected to chemicals, coatings, glues, or lamination. Dust and dirt are removed leaving a clean blend of cured lumber material.

Maintaining a HOA Playground

Annual maintenance is required due to wear and weather damage. In addition to inspecting the equipment, an annual refresher of the surface is usually required. Between the kids using it and weather, a playground usually loses 20% of its surface depth annually.

Order Mulch for HOA Playground

Ordering IPEMA Certified Playground Mulch in Oklahoma City, Moore, Norman and surrounding areas is easy with Mr. Mulch. However, due to the high production standards of this product and demand be sure to check ahead for availability. It is not uncommon for us to get a few weeks backed up during peak season.

Gravel near me. One of the top Google searches in Oklahoma for a good reason.

Driveway Gravel delivery in Oklahoma City, Moore, Norman

When it cost on average $150,000 to asphalt 1 mile of road compared to $25,000-$30,000 to gravel 1 mile you can see why there are so many gravel roads and driveways in Oklahoma. We deliver a variety of crushed limestone driveway gravel in the OKC metro, Moore, Norman and surrounding areas.

There are over 2.1 million miles (almost 54% of all roads including federal and state highways) of unpaved roads in the United States. 109 miles of roadway in Cleveland County are paved with Gravel.

A significant benefit of using limestone gravel is that gravel driveways are porous and will

help mitigate many issues caused by the heavy rainfalls common to Oklahoma. A porous surface around a

structure allows for the water to irrigate more rapidly and recharge ground water for added environmental

benefits. Many cities including Norman have begun issuing taxes on non-porous surface areas of homes to

encourage homeowners to create a greener landscape.

Maintaining a gravel driveway can be challenging, but with annual maintenance it is very attainable. We deliver gravel in dump truck loads with homeowners in mind. Thats why we use a smaller single axle dump truck that allows us to access more areas without damaging the ground with a heavy tandem axle truck. Sure, it takes us a few more trips to complete a job sometimes but we think the benefits to the customer are worth it.
